Key Pieces of the Collection

Fungal Fusion

The “Fungal Fusion” men’s suit presents a robust jacket with characteristic shoulder pads and curves reminiscent of a mushroom cap. A stand-up collar and sophisticated pleat details that cleverly conceal practical pockets complete the design. The trousers are straight-cut and loosely fitting, with a pleat at the front that adds volume and comfort to the ensemble. The innovation of this outfit lies in its materials: denim artfully overgrown with mycelium, symbolizing the fusion of fashion and nature, paired with a silk top dyed with various fungi.

Connected Nature

This ensemble consists of a blouse made of dyed silk, featuring shoulder pads in the characteristic style of the 80s. The blouse is complemented by loosely fitting trousers whose flowing cut reflects the silhouette of the blouse. A multi-layered fabric reminiscent of a wrap skirt and mimicking the shape of a mushroom cap completes the outfit, bringing it into a harmonious balance between simple elegance and modern use of materials.

Mycelia Whisper

The “Mycelia Whisper” dress is characterized by clear lines and a reference to natural shapes. It features a stand-up collar that harmoniously transitions into a shawl collar. A continuous seam runs from the bust darts to the hem, giving the dress a structured silhouette. A special feature is the circular cape that begins at the back and takes the shape of a mushroom cap, creating a flowing yet structured back view.

Mushroom Muse

The “Mushroom Muse” dress transforms the concept of a blouse into a dress featuring distinctive shoulder pads in the style of the 80s. The dress has a form-fitting shape with a slit at the back for freedom of movement. The silk used was dyed and cultivated with fungi. A corset is worn over the dress, made from the special material provided by Anne Zhao and Prof. Alexander Bismarck. This material, obtained from mushroom fruiting bodies, brings an innovative texture and materiality to the design that enriches the outfit both visually and conceptually.

Inspiration

Mycelium Interwoven embodies the fascinating connection between nature and fashion. This collection invites you to discover the invisible networks of the fungal world in the form of innovative garments. Each outfit tells a story of sustainability, creativity, and the symbiosis between humans and nature. Through the use of fungal materials and biodesign techniques, Mycelium Interwoven opens up new perspectives for the future of fashion – a future where clothing is not only aesthetically pleasing but also ecologically responsible. Experience how this collection redefines the boundaries between wearability and connection to nature, and let yourself be inspired by the transformative power of fungi in the world of fashion.

Earth's natural Internet

The idea of fungi acting as “Earth’s natural Internet” particularly fascinated me. These fine mycelial threads that permeate the soil and interact with other organisms convey the impression of a complex communication system coordinating natural processes on Earth. This philosophical approach and the inherent connection to nature were pivotal in my pursuit of this field of research.

My collection connects three temporal dimensions: The past, represented by the dynamic and experimental aesthetics of the 1980s – an era when fungal materials in fashion were unimaginable; the present, embodied by current research and applications of mycelium in textiles; and the future, symbolized by the yet unexplored potential of fungal materials and the promising prospects they offer for sustainable fashion.

Colors of Nature

The collection’s color palette reflects the diversity and evolution of color tones in nature, particularly from the world of mushrooms. It goes beyond traditional earthy mushroom tones and develops a palette that doesn’t directly reference mushrooms as a source:

Spore Shadow
19-0303 TCX

Ghost Fungus
11-0601 TCX

Midnight Morel
6 C

Shiitake Shade
11-4301 TCX

Forest Morel

Gills Gleam
11-4201 TCX

Porcini Sand
13-1106 TCX

Blushing Boletus
16-1731 TCX

Spore Cream
12-0804 TCX

Coral Luster
17-1464 TCX

Oyster Blush
15-1515 TCX

Twilight Truffle
9-4006 TCX

This color palette reflects the yet unexplored areas and fascination with fungi, as well as the protection and hidden realm of mycelium or fungi themselves. Dark tones symbolize the secretive facet of the mushroom world, while pastel shades emphasize the promising, exciting possibilities, positive developments, and diversity of mushrooms. The bright green and red colors illustrate the open future and the unexplored development that the mushroom kingdom still hold

Innovative Materials

The material concept of this collection seeks a balance between the soft, silky texture of mycelium and the striking, robust appearance of mushrooms. Silk represents the flowing, silky, and fragile qualities that the mycelium should interpret. It contrasts with harder materials like denim, which express the expressive, powerful nature and strength of mushrooms, the unexplored, and the solid.

Central to the material concept was the effort to successfully implement the conducted experiments on a larger scale. This includes various aspects: dyeing with fungal pigments, where different types of fungi were used to dye silk. Equally important was the cultivation of mycelium on textiles, where mycelial cultures were grown on fabrics to create new material structures and properties. A particularly innovative aspect was the fungal materials that Prof. Alexander Bismarck and Anne Zhao from the University of Vienna had been researching for some time. They developed a novel, leather-like material from fungal fruiting bodies. Through our collaboration, they further developed and produced this material specifically for my collection. I had the unique opportunity to be the first designer to work with this innovative material and incorporate it into my collection. These materials embody the duality of the fungal world: the soft and delicate mycelium, comparable to silk, and the more stable and moldable fruiting body, represented by the material from Anne Zhao and Alexander Bismarck, as well as the overgrown denim.

Mycelium in Motion

Capturing Fungal Fashion

The collection was presented in an elaborate Lookbook & Editorial Shoot. Patrick Houi took on the photography, supported by his assistant Leon Grunau. Models Flor Ramirez from louisa-models, Ray D. Bui and Ria Fei, both from tigers-mgmt, brought the creations to life. Anastasia Boukli was responsible for hair and makeup, contributing to completing the vision of the collection. In addition to the photoshoot, an impressive video of the collection was produced. Alexandre Weber Martins directed, while Maximiliam Ruhm acted as video producer. Jesse Mickle served as Director of Photography and Kai Zwirnlein took on the task of editor. This video team worked closely with the models to capture the essence of the collection. The resulting fashion film can be seen on top of this page or here.
