Fiction

A Hero's Journey in Fashion

The semester project “Fiction” arose from the question of what fiction means. For me, Marlene Raymakers, fiction takes place in another world or in a self-imagined one. Science fiction films often show us alien worlds where heroes save these worlds. But there are heroes in “real” life too. I see myself as a heroine on my own hero’s journey. My life path represents this journey, which only I can walk, with all its obstacles. I view life as a hero’s journey, similar to a protagonist in a film. Even if I can’t save the whole world, maybe I can – at least in my thoughts, which know no boundaries.

Fuchsia Meets Ultraviolet

The color palette of the collection was originally inspired by the trend colors for Summer 2022, including Fuchsia, Amazon Green, Chalk White, Mango Orange, Ultraviolet, and Walnut. Ultimately, I decided to focus on two colors: Fuchsia as the main color and Ultraviolet as an accent color. This color choice could be interpreted as a symbol for the duality of the hero’s journey – the bright Fuchsia as an expression of courage and passion, while the deep Ultraviolet represents mystery and inner strength.

Strength and Grace in Fabric

To realize my vision, I chose two main materials that embody the contrast between strength and grace. I considered what my “inner heroine” needs to feel strong, invulnerable, and brave while also reflecting her dreamy, playful, delicate side. I could only achieve this connection with different materials.

Ultraviolet neoprene fabric, made of 100% synthetic rubber, was chosen to convey a sense of security. This material allows for good protection, and not just in water or from the sun. Since I chose this material for the top, it also protects the heroine’s chest area. In contrast, there’s the transparent silk fabric. This 100% silk plays around arms and legs, bringing femininity, elegance, and lightness to the design.

Key Pieces of the Collection

My collection includes various key pieces. The silk trousers with slightly flared legs from the knee line and a 3 cm wide waistband with snap buttons combine comfort and style. The French seams and rolled hem testify to good quality.

The centerpiece of the collection is undoubtedly the asymmetrical neoprene suit. It perfectly embodies the idea of “hero design”. The asymmetrical cut, the inserted side parts, and the different trouser legs symbolize the unpredictability of the hero’s journey. The silk sleeves and artfully designed collar add a surprising delicacy to the robust neoprene. Extended shoulders and additional freedom of movement through a clever insert make this piece ready for any challenge.

Capturing the Heroine

To bring the vision of my “Fiction” collection fully to life, a breathtaking photo shoot was realized. Photographer Leander Rambichler and model Anna Kickartz managed to capture the essence of the hero design. The images not only show the garments in action but also tell the story of a modern heroine – strong, elegant, and ready for any adventure, be it in fantasy or in everyday life.
